MANICURE AT HOME
My friend Radhika and I were colleagues. I noticed she always had her nails done and they looked immaculate. So one day, I asked her if she gets it done professionally. She told me she does them herself. So, she kindly offered to share her take on manicure at home.
Radhika started painting her nails from a very young age. Mainly attending birthday parties and family functions. However, as she got older, Radhika looked at manicure as a form of art and over time, got better at doing manicure and nail art.
One can never have enough tools for doing manicure at home. There’s just endless possibilities in getting creative with nail art.
Here’s a list of essential items you will need.
Nail polish remover
Rubbing alcohol
Cotton pads
Nail Cutter
Cuticle Pusher
Nail File
Nail buffer (4 sides)
Base Coat
Nail Colour
Fast Drying Top Coat
Olive Oil / Cuticle Oil
Now that we have the tools ready, let’s get started!
STEP 1
Please dip the cotton pad in some nail polish remover and remove previous colour if any
STEP 2
Trim your nails according to the desired length and shape
STEP 3
Once happy with the shape, file your nails using the file. Mainly focusing on the edges.
STEP 4
Using the cuticle pusher, gently push them back.
STEP 5
File the base of your nails using a 4 sided buffer
STEP 6
Clean your nails with rubbing alcohol just to clean before any application
STEP 7
Apply base coat on your nails
STEP 8
Once the top coat dries, paint a thin coat of desired nail polish. Depending on the texture of the nail polish you will need to repeat this 2-3 times
STEP 9
After a moment, apply a thin layer of top coat
STEP 10
Now sit down and relax till the nail polish dries for a bit before applying cuticle oil. Gently massage them on your cuticle
Radhika’s TOP TIPS
1) A dotting tool is an amazing one to have in your vanity to turn your basic nail colour to a beautiful nail art.
2) To get a clean stroke of colour, rest your wrist on a steady support. Radhika usually uses her desk for this.
3) A weekly massage for your nails with some olive oil and fresh lemon juice is great for healthy and strong nails.
4) Radhika personally likes Sally Hansen products as they have stunning colours at an affordable range with great quality.
A complete manicure can take up 20 - 30 minutes depending on how fast the nail colour dries. A gel based top coat is a great way to keep the nail polish longer. It also helps with the quick drying. Hope you find these tips helpful. Good luck and happy painting!
